Weighing 38 kilograms and standing 0.63 meters tall, Black Panther 2.0 broke the machine dog world dash record previously set by Boston Dynamics' WildCat during the robotic dog mission show at the World Robot Competition organized by China Media Group on Sunday.
Unveiled in January, the robot boasts a peak stride frequency of five times per second and has recently upgraded its design with three separate carbon fiber lower legs for enhanced strength. While it outpaces most humans in a sprint, it still trails behind nature’s speed champions like cheetahs and ostriches.
The breakthrough project is a collaboration between a humanoid innovation institute at Zhejiang University and Hangzhou-based startup Mirror Me. Beyond racing, future applications could see the Black Panther 2.0 assisting in disaster relief and logistics, such as swiftly navigating earthquake debris.
