John Lee Champions National Security & Hong Kong’s Future

Five years after the implementation of the national security law on June 30, 2020, John Lee, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, is urging a renewed focus on safeguarding national security while leveraging Hong Kong's unique strengths. In a signed article published on multiple local media outlets this Monday, Lee highlighted how the law has contributed to a stable and prosperous society where residents enjoy normal lives and abundant development opportunities. 🔒

Lee pointed out that international credit rating agencies have given positive evaluations, reinforcing Hong Kong’s reputation as the world's freest economy and a top international financial center. With five universities ranking among the world's top 100, experts say Hong Kong is well on its way to becoming the largest wealth management center, paving the way for a bright economic future. 💼🌍

Amidst profound global changes and growing uncertainties, Lee emphasized that a comprehensive view of national security is crucial. He reminded everyone that security is the foundation of development, and that development, in turn, safeguards security. This balanced approach has not only maintained order but also positioned Hong Kong as a model for upholding the "One Country, Two Systems" framework.

At an academic symposium earlier this month, experts such as Liu Huawen of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences noted that the national security law has fostered a safer environment where residents can fully enjoy their rights. British barrister Grenville Cross recalled the chaotic scenes of 2019, emphasizing that the law helped restore order and protected human rights. Similarly, former deputy speaker Ong Tee Keat observed that the stability resulting from this legislation has been key to attracting investors from around the world.

Lee's call is a reminder that in a rapidly changing world, a robust security framework is essential for continuous growth and prosperity. For young professionals, entrepreneurs, students, and culture enthusiasts alike, Hong Kong’s journey serves as an inspiring model of resilience, maturity, and forward-looking governance.
