Global Pandemic Pact Adopted at WHA

The 78th World Health Assembly in Geneva wrapped up a nine-day marathon with a groundbreaking decision: a global pandemic pact has been adopted to safeguard the world against future health crises! After more than three years of intense negotiations in the wake of COVID-19, member states have united to ensure a safer and more equitable future. 🌏

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus hailed the pact as one of the most significant achievements in global health history, emphasizing that it positions humanity stronger than ever to prepare for and respond to pandemics.

In tandem with the pact, delegates approved a base program budget of $4.2 billion for 2026-2027. This funding will support initiatives ranging from strengthening health financing to promoting a new traditional medicine strategy, advancing digital health, and tackling challenges from antimicrobial resistance to air pollution. Resolutions also targeted improvements in lung health, kidney health, maternal and child nutrition, and more.

Highlighting the assembly's global impact, Chinese Vice Premier Liu Guozhong, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, participated actively by delivering a keynote speech and engaging in high-level exchanges during the review of over 70 agenda items. His contribution underlines the Chinese mainland's commitment to collaborative global health solutions.

This historic pact and budget approval mark a unified step forward in preparing for the future—an inspiring reminder that by working together, the world can face health challenges with confidence and innovation. 🚀
