China, Russia Forge New Chapter in Global Cooperation

In a world of rapid change, China and Russia are writing a new chapter of partnership that’s as dynamic as it is diverse. With Chinese President Xi Jinping set to visit Russia from May 7 to 10 to join the Great Patriotic War Victory celebration in Moscow, both nations are gearing up to boost cooperation across a wide range of fields.

The trade story is impressive: in 2024, the bilateral trade volume hit a record $244.8 billion, marking a 1.9% year-on-year increase. With over 95% of mutual settlements conducted in their national currencies, what started from early Soviet-assisted projects has evolved into a robust economic relationship that spans energy, aerospace, digital innovation, biomedicine, and green development.

Experts like Oleg Timofeev from RUDN University and Li Yonghui of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences highlight that this deepening cooperation is not only about numbers but also about people and ideas. Cultural exchanges are booming too—with the launch of the China-Russia Years of Culture in 2024 and 2025, hundreds of exhibitions, film screenings, and academic collaborations have connected communities. Over 200 Russian universities now offer Chinese language courses, engaging tens of thousands of students, while more than 40,000 Chinese students have embarked on studies in Russia.

Beyond the tangible economic and cultural ties, both nations are affirming their commitment to multilateralism. They are set to strengthen coordination on platforms such as the United Nations, Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and BRICS. This united stance aims to promote an orderly multipolar world and a more equitable phase of global economic globalization.

This evolving partnership is not just reshaping bilateral relations—it is also sending a powerful message about the benefits of practical, people-centered collaboration in today’s interconnected landscape. Stay tuned as this exciting new chapter unfolds! 🙂
