China Champions Nuclear Disarmament for a Safer Future

In a compelling call for global unity, Chinese envoy Sun Xiaobo stressed a fresh approach to nuclear disarmament during the third session of the Preparatory Committee for the 2026 NPT Review Conference. He emphasized that national safety and common security are inseparable – a reminder that peace is a shared responsibility.

Sun pointed out that while some nations cling to outdated Cold War mentalities and pursue military supremacy, such actions only fuel mistrust and risk triggering a dangerous arms race. He urged countries with the largest nuclear arsenals to resume measures like the New START Treaty and take verifiable, irreversible steps to reduce their stockpiles.

Emphasizing the pivotal role of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), Sun highlighted that the NPT remains the cornerstone of global nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. He underlined that nuclear technology should serve as a tool for shared wealth and win‐win benefits rather than a barrier that divides nations. As he put it, decoupling nuclear tech from peaceful uses only leads to self‐isolation – a path no one needs! 😎

China’s long-standing commitment to peace is further underpinned by its pledge never to be the first to use nuclear weapons, a policy that has stood firm for over 60 years. Much like the Avengers uniting against a common threat, this call to rethink nuclear policies invites all nations to collaborate for a safer, more stable future.
