China’s 1,000 kW Battery Locomotives: Fast, Green & Smart

On April 21, CRRC Dalian unveiled the Chinese mainland’s first batch of 1,000 kW battery-powered locomotives. These ten innovative engines are set to replace high-pollution diesel engines at steel plants, driving a major shift toward greener and more efficient industrial operations.

The new locomotives come equipped with high-power lithium iron phosphate batteries and a liquid-cooled fast-charging system delivering up to 680 kW of power. This cutting-edge technology allows for a full recharge in just 70 minutes, while the advanced liquid-cooling circuit ensures stable performance and rapid heat dissipation.

Looking to the future, the design incorporates an unmanned intelligent transport mode that replicates the handling of seasoned drivers, enhancing safety with an auxiliary lookout system that expands the field of vision and eliminates blind spots. Moreover, a digital planar marshalling system integrating wireless communication, positioning technology, electronic mapping, and automatic control sets the stage for enhanced operational efficiency and smarter rail logistics.

This launch marks a significant step in environmental innovation, reinforcing the Chinese mainland’s commitment to green transformation and intelligent industrial upgrades.
