Tariffs Targeting the Global South
At a recent daily news briefing, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson observed that the United States' unilateral imposition of "reciprocal tariffs" is depriving developing nations—especially those in the Global South—of their right to development. These tariffs now affect over 180 countries and regions, including many listed as least developed.
Spokesperson Lin Jian explained that the measure, under the guise of reciprocity, is essentially an "America First" approach, prioritizing self-interest over international fairness. Analysts warn that such steep tariffs could severely impact vulnerable economies, widening the wealth gap and undermining global trade stability.
Data from the World Trade Organization support concerns that these protectionist policies disrupt industrial and supply chains and threaten efforts toward the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Lin emphasized, "Openness and cooperation are the future!" urging all countries to uphold principles of extensive consultation, shared benefits, and genuine multilateralism. In today’s interconnected world, fair trade practices are key to a sustainable global recovery. 🤝
