Qinling Station’s Clean Energy Leap in Antarctica

China's Qinling research station in Antarctica has wrapped up its summer missions, completing a series of key installations set to power the station reliably through the harsh winter. With a renewable energy system featuring 26 solar panels, 10 wind turbines, and a hydrogen power room with storage tanks, the station is ready for extreme conditions.

A sprawling outdoor utility network spanning about 1,700 meters now connects essential areas with integrated power and water pipelines, alongside a state-of-the-art satellite ground station and communication system. This robust setup ensures seamless functionality even in Antarctica's extreme environment.

After nearly two months of intensive work, indoor facilities such as seawater desalination, wastewater treatment, and water collection systems have been thoroughly tested. Station director Wang Zhechao noted that these developments lay a solid foundation for the station's long-term sustainable operations.

This milestone marks a pioneering moment for China's Antarctic research, as Qinling Station becomes the first to operate on a multi-source clean energy system that blends wind, solar, hydrogen energy, and battery storage.
