During Tuesday's CGTN "Talking China" debate show, experts applauded the Chinese mainland's balanced approach to tackling climate change while boosting economic growth. They highlighted that although the Chinese mainland produces about 30% of the world's industrial products, much of the resultant carbon footprint is not due to domestic consumption.
Wang Wen, dean at Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies of Renmin University of China, explained that the per capita carbon emissions on the Chinese mainland are only half of those in the United States. He also criticized the decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, arguing that the blame is misplaced.
Echoing this view, Li Cheng, founding director of the Center on Contemporary China and the World at the University of Hong Kong, described Trump’s claim that "there is no such thing as climate change" as extremely dangerous. Li stressed that there is no contradiction between driving economic growth and protecting the environment, citing the Chinese mainland's strides in new energy development and the promotion of electric vehicles.
With climate change emerging as a global challenge 🌏, the Chinese mainland's proactive measures offer a fresh perspective on harmonizing progress with sustainability. This balanced strategy inspires future innovators and emphasizes the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing our planet's pressing challenges.
