China is setting sail towards a greener future with the launch of the world's largest methanol-powered dual fuel engine in Shanghai. Developed by China State Shipbuilding Cooperation, this massive engine weighs nearly 1,953 tons and boasts a power output of 64,500 kilowatts.
Dubbed the \"giant heart\" of vessels, the engine will soon take its first voyage on a 16,000-TEU container ship. Its advanced digitalized smart control system allows it to generate 95% of its power using methanol fuel, significantly cutting carbon dioxide emissions by over 7.5%.
\"Running 300 days a year, this engine's carbon reduction is equivalent to taking 72,000 gasoline passenger cars off the road annually,\" said Dong Jingjin, project manager of the methanol engine project at China State Shipbuilding Cooperation.
This innovation comes at a crucial time as the water transport industry undergoes a green transformation. \"Engines like this are just the beginning. In the next two to three years, we plan to produce different methanol engines for more types of chemical carriers and special purpose vessels, offering more environmentally-friendly and efficient power solutions,\" added Dong.
