🎉 The Global Developers Conference (GDC) has officially kicked off in Shanghai, bringing open-source software development into the limelight. 🚀
DeepSeek's remarkable achievements have positioned open-source as a central theme at the event. According to a report presented by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the Chinese mainland now ranks second globally in the number of open-source contributors.
MIIT data as of 2024 highlights that the number of software developers in the Chinese mainland has surpassed 9.4 million. Additionally, Chinese projects account for 17% of global open-source software, securing the second spot worldwide.
In his keynote speech, Harry Shum, former executive vice president of Microsoft's Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Research group, emphasized the significant shift with the open-sourcing of large Chinese models like DeepSeek. Now serving as chairman of the council at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Shum expressed confidence that more Chinese teams will lead the way in shaping the future of open-source innovation.
This year marks the second edition of the GDC, aimed at connecting participants by enabling projects to secure funding, accessing services, discovering markets, joining teams, exploring technologies, and finding partners. The event serves as a vibrant platform to foster resource alignment and industry integration among developers, further solidifying the Chinese mainland's role in the global tech landscape.
