The Chinese mainland has expressed its support for recent peace efforts in Ukraine, including the newly agreed-upon U.S.-Russia peace talks, according to Fu Cong, China's permanent representative to the United Nations.
Speaking at the UN Security Council briefing, Fu emphasized China's dedication to resolving global conflicts through dialogue and adherence to the UN Charter. He highlighted the Minsk Agreements from a decade ago as a positive step toward deescalation, though he lamented their incomplete implementation which led to the ongoing crisis.
Fu outlined China's four-point proposal, advocating for respect of sovereignty and territorial integrity, observance of the UN Charter, addressing legitimate security concerns, and supporting peaceful settlement efforts. He noted that China has been actively involved in diplomatic mediation, maintaining communication with both Russia and Ukraine, and contributing to ceasefire and political settlement initiatives.
Additionally, China has collaborated with Brazil and other nations to form the Group of Friends for Peace, aiming to harness the collective wisdom of the Global South to promote peace. Fu described China's proposal as objective, fair, rational, and pragmatic, echoing the international community's consensus.
Fu expressed optimism that the Ukraine crisis is nearing a pivotal moment for negotiation and that lasting peace can be achieved through constructive dialogue. He called on all parties involved to engage earnestly in the peace talks and work towards a just and sustainable resolution.
“As the conflict has been unfolding on European soil, it is imperative for Europe to work for peace,” Fu stated, urging the parties to address the crisis's root causes through negotiation to establish a balanced and effective security framework for lasting regional stability.
