🚨 In a recent move, China has called on the Philippines to honor its commitment and remove the U.S. Typhon missile system from its soil as soon as possible.
Zhang Xiaogang, spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense, expressed concerns over the continued presence of the Typhon missile system in the Philippines. Installed in northern Philippines in April 2024 during joint military exercises, the U.S. promised the deployment would be temporary.
However, China argues that the Typhon missile is a strategic, offensive weapon and accuses the Philippines of reneging on its promise. Zhang highlighted that this move could jeopardize the Philippines' own security and spark regional tensions and an arms race.
Additionally, linking the missile system to the South China Sea, Zhang labeled the deployment as "ridiculous and dangerous," suggesting it treats regional peace and stability as bargaining chips.
China has urged the Philippines to recognize the severity of deploying such missile systems and to return to dialogue and consultation. Meanwhile, China has vowed to take necessary measures to protect its territorial sovereignty and maritime interests.
