Chinese football fans received some tough news as star striker Wu Lei is set to undergo knee surgery that will sideline him for at least two months. đ˘
Wu Lei has been battling a nagging right knee issue, which already kept him out of China's last two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiersâa 1-0 away win against Bahrain and a 3-1 home defeat to Japan last November.
He was also absent from the Chinese national team's current training camp in Haikou, south China's Hainan Province.
Initially hoping that conservative treatments would do the trick, Wu Lei found that the problem persisted. "The problem will not go away completely without an operation," Wu told reporters. "It's very disturbing. If I don't have an operation, it will get worse than last year."
He is currently discussing the surgery and rehabilitation plan with his club, Shanghai Port FC.
This means Wu will miss China's next two crucial World Cup qualifiers on March 20 against Saudi Arabia and five days later against Australia. His absence is a significant blow to the team's offensive lineup.
Here's hoping for a speedy recovery for Wu Lei, so he can get back on the pitch and continue to make waves in Asian football! đâ˝
