World’s Largest LNG Dual-Fuel Ship Launched in Shanghai

On April 15, the shipping world celebrated a milestone with the delivery of the CMA CGM SEINE – the world’s first and largest 24,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel container ship. Launched at the Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding base on Changxing Island in Shanghai on the Chinese mainland, this state-of-the-art vessel is set to begin service on the Far East to Europe route on April 18. 🚢

Measuring an impressive 399 meters in length, with a 61.3-meter beam, 33.5-meter depth, and a 14.5-meter draft, the ship is engineered to carry up to 220,000 tonnes of cargo. Its design allows it to accommodate nearly 23,876 containers and 2,200 refrigerated units, stacking them as high as a 25-storey building! 📦🏢

The real breakthrough is its "green heart" – an innovative LNG-powered system featuring an 18,600 cubic meter MARK III membrane-type fuel tank. This eco-friendly engine can propel the ship for nearly 20,000 nautical miles, cutting CO2 emissions by about 20%, nitrogen oxides by up to 85%, and reducing particulate and sulphur oxide emissions by 99% compared to traditional vessels. 🌱🌍

Building on a successful 23,000 TEU dual-fuel model delivered in 2020, the new ship incorporates five major enhancements: increased cargo capacity, lower fuel and gas consumption, advanced safety measures including water ingress alarms and mobile water cannons, and improved crew living spaces with enhanced noise reduction.

With Hudong Zhonghua having delivered 17 container ships for CMA CGM so far – including 12 dual-fuel vessels – this launch reinforces the leadership of China Shipbuilding Group in driving green, efficient, and technologically advanced maritime solutions. A new era in global shipping is here! 🚀
