ASEAN Unites: Malaysian PM Urges Stand Against U.S. Tariffs

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has called for ASEAN nations to stand firm together amid sweeping U.S. tariffs imposed last week. Speaking at a prime minister's department staff meeting, Anwar emphasized the strength of ASEAN, noting its 640 million-strong population and robust economic prowess. He stated, "We must stand firm together as ASEAN – with a population of 640 million and an economic strength that is among the top in the world."

The new tariffs, announced by President Donald Trump, have rattled stock markets globally and raised alarm among governments. Southeast Asian economic ministers are set to meet on Thursday to discuss the tariffs and coordinate a unified response. Each country will share its position, reflecting a commitment to unity rather than retaliatory measures.

The regional impact has been mixed: while manufacturing powerhouse Vietnam faced a 46% tariff on its exports to the United States and Cambodia saw a 49% duty on its low-cost clothing exports, Malaysia encountered a relatively lower 24% tariff. Trade Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz remarked, "I think two wrongs don't make a right," underscoring the risks of escalating into a trade war that could hurt the global economy.

With Malaysia holding this year’s rotating chair of ASEAN, the call for solidarity resonates as a beacon for coordinated action. Amid global economic uncertainty, the region is looking to forge a united front to safeguard its interests and ensure stability. Stay tuned as the discussions among economic ministers unfold, potentially shaping ASEAN's strategy in these challenging times. 💪
