Chinese Mainland Dominates Global Manufacturing Value Chains

The Chinese mainland continues to be the heart of global manufacturing value chains, as revealed by a recent Boao Forum for Asia report. Titled "Asian Economic Outlook and Integration Progress Annual Report 2025," the study shows that since 2017, global trade in intermediate goods has grown increasingly reliant on the Chinese mainland.

In 2023, 16% of global intermediate goods trade depended on the Chinese mainland compared to 15% linked to North America. The report highlights that the trade frictions triggered by the United States in 2018 did not boost its own position but instead widened the gap with the Chinese mainland’s influence in manufacturing chains.

Even with some trade relocations since 2021, the Chinese mainland has kept its dominant role, leading in 20 of the 22 most traded intermediate goods. This trend not only underscores the robustness of its manufacturing base but also its growing importance in technology-driven sectors. ⚙️🌏
