Mexico Strikes Back: President Sheinbaum Announces Tariffs Against the U.S.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum isn't holding back! 🇲🇽🔥 On Saturday, she announced that Mexico will retaliate against the tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump with its own tariffs and other measures.
Sheinbaum took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice her stance, rejecting Washington's accusation that her government has alliances with drug trafficking groups. \"We categorically reject the White House's slander that the Mexican government has alliances with criminal organizations, as well as any intention of meddling in our territory,\" she wrote.
But despite the tension, Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico doesn't seek confrontation. \"Our government aims for collaboration and dialogue with our northern neighbor,\" she stressed. 🤝
Since taking office in October, Sheinbaum has been cracking down on drug trafficking. Her administration has seized 20 million doses of fentanyl, a deadly synthetic opioid, and detained over 10,000 individuals linked to drug trafficking. Talk about action! 💪
The tariff tussle escalated after President Trump signed an order imposing tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and the Chinese mainland. In solidarity, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Saturday that Canada would impose 25% tariffs on C$155 billion worth of U.S. goods.
