Canada PM Carney Heads to China for Trade Talks Amid Global Turmoil

Next week, from January 14 to 17, 2026, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will be in Beijing at the invitation of the Chinese premier Li Qiang. This is the first visit by a Canadian PM in eight years, marking a new chapter in China-Canada ties.

Last October, Carney and the Chinese premier met on the sidelines of the 32nd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in South Korea, where they agreed to resume exchanges and cooperation across multiple fields. Both sides pledged to address shared economic and trade concerns through dialogue and consultation.

The engagement continued in September, when Carney and Li Qiang crossed paths at the United Nations General Assembly, followed by visits to China by senior Canadian officials, including the foreign minister. In November, China resumed group tours to Canada, welcoming Chinese travelers to boost people-to-people ties.

Amid global trade turmoil, both countries are eager to deepen cooperation in energy, green development, tourism and more 🤝. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said the visit aims to enhance political trust, properly handle differences, and deliver concrete benefits to the two peoples.

Young professionals and entrepreneurs may find fresh business opportunities, while students and travelers can look forward to smoother cultural exchanges and stronger connections across the Pacific 🌐.
