Hamas to Dissolve Gaza Government Bodies, Set Up Independent Committee

📰 Hamas announced on Saturday (January 10, 2026) that it has decided to dissolve all its government bodies in the Gaza Strip. This move paves the way for an independent administrative committee, currently being formed, to take over management duties.

Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem said the group made a "clear decision" to end all governmental entities overseeing affairs in Gaza and transfer their responsibilities to a technocratic committee. On Thursday, he added, Hamas is now awaiting the formal announcement of the committee's members, following an agreement with other Palestinian factions.

Since 2007, Hamas has run government institutions in Gaza after clashes with Fatah, which governs the West Bank. This split has left the coastal enclave – home to over two million residents – under separate administration.

According to sources within Hamas, Cairo will host a delegation next week to discuss the second phase of the ceasefire agreement with Israel and to finalize the committee's lineup.

A ceasefire between Hamas and Israel has been in effect since October 2025. Its first phase included an exchange of prisoners and detainees, the entry of humanitarian aid, and a partial withdrawal of Israeli forces from parts of the Gaza Strip.

Here's what the second phase aims to achieve:

  • Complete military withdrawal from Gaza
  • Disarmament of Hamas
  • Large-scale reconstruction
  • Formation of a transitional governing body

In December 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump said he would push for a rapid launch of phase two, stressing that disarmament of Hamas is a key condition for progress.

🔍 Analysts say this shake-up could reshape governance in Gaza and test the ceasefire's durability as the region moves toward reconstruction and stability.
