ECOWAS Pushes Guinea-Bissau Military on Detainee Releases and Transition Timeline

On Saturday, January 10, 2026, ECOWAS leaders flew into Bissau for talks with Guinea-Bissau's military government, aiming to free political detainees and map out a speedy return to constitutional rule.

The delegation was led by Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio—currently ECOWAS's rotating chair—and Senegal President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, alongside Horta Inta-A, the transitional president of Guinea-Bissau. Their mission? Build trust, ease tensions, and set the stage for clear elections. 🤝

They met opposition figure Domingos Simoes Pereira, detained since the coup and barred by the Supreme Court from running in the upcoming November elections. They also paid a visit to opposition candidate Fernando Dias, who's now seeking asylum inside Nigeria's embassy.

In late December 2025, the military government released six political members linked to Pereira. On January 8, 2026, three more were freed. ECOWAS wants all political prisoners released unconditionally, warning that any detention undermines the trust needed for fruitful dialogue.

But Guinea-Bissau authorities argue for a gradual release without a fixed timeline. They also insist on a longer security period to stabilize the country before elections, saying one year isn't enough for a peaceful vote.

ECOWAS mediators pushed back, calling for a short, structured transition with a firm electoral roadmap. They also discussed deploying an ECOWAS standby force if tensions flare—a move Bissau officials see as a potential threat to sovereignty.

The outcome of these talks could shape Guinea-Bissau's future. Will both sides find common ground to get back on track toward free elections? Stay tuned as ECOWAS and Bissau work to turn the page on political uncertainty. 🌍✨
