Hungary’s UniSpace Program Reaches for the Stars

Ready for liftoff 🚀! Hungary is boosting its space game with the launch of the UniSpace Program, a first-of-its-kind network uniting 21 universities under one national initiative. The mission? Train the next generation of engineers, scientists, policymakers and medical experts to take on the final frontier.

At the Ludovica University of Public Service, future leaders aren’t just studying diplomacy—they’re diving into the laws that govern outer space. “We’ve launched a specialized training initiative called the UniSpace Program, which is a collaboration among 21 Hungarian universities,” says Balazs Bartoki-Gonczy, Director of the Institute of Aerospace and Telecommunications.

Four pillars of space know-how
The program focuses on four key areas:

  • Space policy
  • Space medicine
  • Space engineering
  • Space sciences

“Building a serious space industry, even in a small country like Hungary, is a complex undertaking,” Bartoki-Gonczy adds. “One of its key pillars is education. It starts in elementary school, continues through high school, and of course, higher education plays a vital role as well.”

Earlier in 2026, Hungary’s space ambitions reached orbit when Astronaut Tibor Kapu completed a 20-day mission to the International Space Station. His capsule carried 25 Hungarian experiments, many designed by students at the University of Szeged.

“You need specialists—people who know about space law, space science, space engineering, even biology,” explains Dezso Horvath, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Informatics. “This program comprises four separate courses, and the one we are mostly involved in is space science.”

With rockets on the horizon and classrooms buzzing with curiosity, Hungary is proving that size isn’t a barrier when you aim for the stars ⭐🌌.
