Yesterday, on January 8, 2026, the 2026 China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges kicked off at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa. More than 200 diplomats, AU officials, and sector representatives gathered to call for deeper cultural ties between the Chinese mainland and African nations.

Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Chinese foreign minister, read President Xi Jinping’s congratulatory letter and delivered a keynote emphasizing how mutual learning among civilizations can drive modernization and build an all-weather community with a shared future.
Speaking at the ceremony, Republic of the Congo foreign minister Jean-Claude Gakosso (African co-chair of FOCAC), AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, and Ethiopian President Taye Atske Selassie highlighted the importance of solidarity, justice, and people-to-people exchanges in culture, education, tourism, arts, and youth programs.
