Lanterns Light Up Nanjing’s Laomendong Ahead of Spring Festival

As of January 2026, Nanjing City's Laomendong scenic zone is already lighting up with vibrant lanterns, marking the early kickoff of the Qinhuai Lantern Festival, one of the Chinese mainland's major national-level intangible cultural heritage events.

Visitors strolling along the riverbank are greeted by dazzling displays, from traditional palace lanterns to playful animal figures, casting colorful reflections on the water. Exhibition zones are racing toward their final installations, but a select few lanterns are already glowing, giving the city a festive head start.

Local food stalls near the stone bridges serve tasty bites like sesame-rice balls and spiced skewers, while street artists perform folk dances under arches of light. It even feels like a scene straight out of a Miyazaki film: selfie-lovers, get ready! 📸🏮

Whether you’re a traveler exploring Asian traditions, a student studying cultural heritage, or simply looking for a fun night out, Laomendong’s lantern glow is setting the perfect mood. The full festival will continue through the Spring Festival period, lighting up Nanjing with joy and color until late February.
