Yesterday, Simon Stiell, the Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC, issued a stark warning: the United States' decision to pull out of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) could leave Americans less secure and less prosperous. 🌍💸
"While all other nations are stepping forward together, this latest step back from global leadership, climate cooperation and science can only harm the U.S. economy, jobs and living standards, as wildfires, floods, mega-storms and droughts get rapidly worse," Stiell said on Thursday, January 8.
The move follows a memorandum President Donald Trump signed on Wednesday to withdraw the U.S. from 66 international organizations, including the UN climate framework. 🚫🌐
Stiell highlighted the real costs for American families and businesses: climbing energy, food, transport and insurance bills as renewables undercut fossil fuels in price; harsher climate-driven disasters battering crops, infrastructure and communities; and volatile oil, coal and gas markets fueling conflicts, instability and forced migration.
He also cautioned that U.S. manufacturing jobs could take a hit, as every other major economy ramps up clean energy investments—powering fresh opportunities for growth and energy security abroad. 🔋⚡️
With the world racing toward greener solutions, experts say stepping off the global stage now may cost the U.S. more in the long run. Are we ready to pay the price? 🤔
