Imagine waking up to news that a superpower is eyeing one of the world’s biggest icy islands 🧊🌍. This week, Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen called recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump on Greenland “worrying,” and made it clear Finland stands with Denmark and respects Greenland’s right to self-determination.
Speaking at the Finnish parliament after an extraordinary Foreign Affairs Committee meeting, Valtonen said that Denmark’s assessment—that U.S. messages about Greenland must be taken seriously—is Finland’s guide. She highlighted the unique Arctic expertise of the Nordic countries and noted that strengthening Arctic security with NATO allies should never involve threats.
Johannes Koskinen, chair of the committee, described it as “unprecedented” for a NATO member to face threats of violence over territory. He stressed that such rhetoric clashes with the United Nations Charter and international law, and must be called out at every level.
Valtonen also pointed out a shift in U.S. security strategy, released in December, away from a multilateral, rules-based order toward spheres of interest. She warned that favoring the “prerogative of the most powerful” undermines long-term security—even for the biggest players.
Finally, Valtonen was surprised by the U.S. announcement to withdraw from 66 international organizations and agreements, calling it “quite a piece of news.” Finnish officials are now updating lawmakers on how these developments could shape Finland’s future security and foreign policy.
As the Arctic continues to gain strategic importance, allies say it’s time to cool the threats and heat up cooperation 🔥🤝.
