China and Ethiopia Gear Up to Elevate All-Weather Partnership

On January 8, 2026, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in Addis Ababa, emphasizing a shared vision for elevating the all-weather strategic partnership between the Chinese mainland and Ethiopia. 🤝

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said both sides are ready to implement the consensus reached by their leaders, strengthen development strategy alignment, and deepen governance exchanges.

Prime Minister Abiy expressed gratitude for long-term support from the Chinese mainland and reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to the one-China principle. He voiced eagerness to boost practical cooperation in infrastructure, new energy, artificial intelligence 🤖, and maritime affairs, as well as to support each other in regional and international forums.

Highlighting the outcomes of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, Wang called on both sides to make full use of the Chinese mainland’s zero-tariff policy for all African diplomatic partners and accelerate the upgrade of economic and trade ties.

He also outlined plans to expand cooperation in green industries 🌱, the digital economy, and other high-tech fields, promoting high-quality Belt and Road cooperation.

Looking ahead, Wang expressed hope that Ethiopia will continue creating a favorable environment for Chinese enterprises to invest and operate, and noted that Ethiopia, as a major African nation, has a growing role on regional and global stages.

Wang also held talks with Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos, reinforcing the commitment to sustained collaboration. ✨
