This week, the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) issued an apology to the Democratic Republic of Congo following forward Mohamed Amoura’s controversial gesture during their AFCON 2025 Round of 16 clash in Morocco ⚽️.
The 1–0 win was overshadowed when Amoura imitated a pose made famous by superfan Michel Nkuka Mboladinga, known as “Lumumba VEA,” who stands with one arm raised in tribute to independence hero Patrice Lumumba.
Unaware of the gesture’s deeper meaning, Amoura took to Instagram to say, “I was very emotional and didn’t know the meaning behind it. I apologise to Congolese fans.” 🙏
An FAF delegation then visited DR Congo supporters in Rabat, presented Nkuka with an Algerian jersey bearing his nickname, and met DR Congo Sports Minister Didier Budimbu 🤝. FAF representatives expressed regret over the misunderstanding and reaffirmed the longstanding friendship between the two nations.
This apology reminds us that football isn’t just a game—it’s a bridge between cultures. Here’s to fair play and mutual respect on and off the pitch! 🌍✌️
