In late December 2025, Israel surprised the international community by becoming the first country to formally recognize Somaliland as a sovereign state. On December 26, this decision drew swift condemnation from Somalia and beyond. Now, the African Union (AU) has escalated its response, demanding that Israel revoke the move immediately.
In a communique issued on Tuesday, the AU Peace and Security Council warned that the recognition threatens the sovereignty, unity, and stability of the Federal Republic of Somalia. “No external actor can alter the borders of an AU member state,” the council stated, calling the declaration “null, void, and without legal effect under international law.” ⚖️
The council cautioned that such a precedent could undermine peace in the Horn of Africa, weaken regional security cooperation, and spark new tensions. It urged all AU member states and global partners to stand in solidarity with Somalia, reaffirm its territorial integrity, and reject actions that undermine international legality.
Highlighting the importance of dialogue within Somalia, the AU also called on member states to support United Nations efforts, including potential collective action at the UN General Assembly, to safeguard Somalia's borders. The bloc stressed that internal dialogue remains the only viable path to resolving disputes.
As this diplomatic dispute unfolds, keep an eye on how it may reshape regional alliances in 2026. 🌍🤔
