Storm Goretti: France braces for ‘meteorological bomb’ after heavy snow

After days of heavy snowfall blanketed France, the country is gearing up for its first named storm of the 2026 winter season.

Storm Goretti is set to hit France today, with the northern and western coasts along the English Channel and Atlantic Ocean likely to be pummelled by wind speeds between 100 and 120 km/h. Four regions have been placed on amber alert for high winds.

Snow has covered areas from the tip of Brittany down to the Mediterranean island of Corsica, sending temperatures crashing. In the Alps, nighttime lows plunged to -18 °C, and major cities have also seen freezing conditions. Schools in the hardest-hit parts of Brittany and Normandy remain closed, and freight trucks have been banned on key roads to prevent accidents.

So far this week, icy roads have claimed five lives in separate crashes, and several trunk highways are shut across the country. Bundle up, folks! As Storm Goretti arrives, authorities urge everyone to stay indoors if possible, secure outdoor items, and follow live updates. ❄️💨
