UN Raises Alarm Over Drone Strike in Eastern DRC

⚠️ This weekend, the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) voiced deep concern over reports of a drone strike in Masisi Centre, North Kivu Province.

In a statement on social media platform X, MONUSCO condemned any attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure. The mission urged an independent verification of the incident, which reportedly hit a residential area late last Friday.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) reported that at least 42 people, including women and children, were admitted to Masisi General Referral Hospital with shrapnel injuries and other trauma. Tragically, two later died from their wounds. 😔

Masisi is one of the areas hardest hit by decades of instability. Fighting has flared up again between government forces and the M23 rebel group since late 2021.

Clashes also erupted on Saturday morning in neighboring South Kivu Province near Uvira, where M23 fighters and pro-government Wazalendo militias met in battle. The town was briefly seized by M23 in December 2022 before they withdrew a week later.

The Congolese government accuses Rwanda of backing M23—a claim Rwanda denies. As peace talks continue, MONUSCO is calling on all parties to respect the ceasefire, follow international humanitarian law, and push forward diplomatic solutions. 🕊️

For news enthusiasts and global citizens, this incident is a stark reminder of how modern conflicts are evolving. We’ll keep an eye on developments as diplomatic efforts unfold. 🌍
