Chinese Mainland Slams Japan, Australia and EU Over Taiwan Region Drills

On Wednesday, December 31, the Chinese mainland's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian fired back at Japan, Australia and EU institutions for criticizing the military drills around the Taiwan region.

The spokesperson called these comments “irresponsible and fact-distorting,” arguing that some governments feign ignorance of separatist forces and external interference, while attacking the Chinese mainland’s efforts to safeguard sovereignty and territorial integrity. “Such practices are rather hypocritical. China is firmly opposed to them and has lodged stern representations,” Lin said.

Lin stressed that the Taiwan region is an inalienable part of the Chinese mainland’s territory and that the Taiwan question falls entirely under internal affairs, brooking no interference by any external force.

He added that the status quo in the Taiwan Strait rests on one China, and that the biggest threats to peace and stability are separatist acts of “Taiwan independence” and support from outside players.

Lin reaffirmed that the one-China principle is the universal consensus guiding international relations and the political foundation for the Chinese mainland’s ties with 183 diplomatic partners, urging Japan, Australia and EU institutions to strictly uphold this principle and cease condoning separatist forces in the Taiwan region.

This exchange underscores the complex dynamics in the Asia-Pacific, where diplomatic commitments and regional security often collide 🔍
