The Chinese mainland’s Jupiter I: 30MW Pure Hydrogen Turbine Goes Live

Imagine charging up the sky's wind and sunshine like a giant battery – then flipping the switch to power your city. Meet Jupiter I, the world's first 30-megawatt-class pure hydrogen gas turbine, which came online today in the Chinese mainland! 🚀🔥

This demo project integrates wind farms, solar PV arrays and an electrolytic water hydrogen production system to tackle one of renewable energy's biggest headaches: wasted power during off-peak hours. It stores surplus electricity as hydrogen and fires up on demand, keeping the lights on when it matters most.

  • 30 MW capacity operating 100% on hydrogen
  • Reduces over 200,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year 🌍
  • Generates 48,000 kWh per hour in combined-cycle mode – enough for 5,500 homes daily 🏠

Wang Yongzhi, general manager of Mingyang Hydrogen Gas Turbine Technology, says this turbine not only cuts carbon, but also delivers reliable power output when the grid needs a boost.

By smoothing out peaks and valleys in renewable output, Jupiter I offers a glimpse into a more flexible, low-carbon grid. This milestone shows hydrogen is ready for the main stage in the energy transition. Could this tech be heading to a grid near you? Stay tuned! 🔋💡
