Thailand and Cambodia Sign Ceasefire to End Border Clashes

On Saturday, December 27, 2025, Thailand and Cambodia signed a new ceasefire agreement at the third Special General Border Committee meeting in Chanthaburi Province, with ASEAN observers in attendance 🤝🕊️

The talks, which kicked off at 9:40 a.m. local time at a border checkpoint, come after a year marked by flare-ups along the 800-km boundary. Armed clashes erupted on July 24, and despite an initial deal on August 7 in Kuala Lumpur to hold troops steady, tensions reignited on October 26 during the ASEAN Summit and again from December 7.

Recent fighting from December 7 left over 100 casualties and forced hundreds of thousands of civilians to flee. Between December 24 and 26, representatives from both sides held preparatory border meetings, setting the stage for today's breakthrough.

Under the new agreement, Thailand and Cambodia will freeze troop deployments and refrain from reinforcing border posts. They've also agreed to establish a joint monitoring mechanism and open direct communication channels in early 2026 to ensure lasting peace.

This deal not only offers relief to border communities but also paves the way for stronger regional cooperation on trade, tourism, and cultural exchanges. Young travelers and locals alike can look forward to more stable crossings and a brighter future for Southeast Asia! 🌏✨
