Interior Minister Elisabeth Baume-Schneider is calling on Switzerland to step up and protect kids from social media risks 📱🚫. Inspired by Australia’s ban on under-16s, she told SonntagsBlick that a similar move could work in Switzerland this year.
"The debate in Australia and the EU is important. It must also be conducted in Switzerland. I am open to a social media ban," said Baume-Schneider, who is a member of the Social Democrats. "We must better protect our children." 💬
She highlighted concerns over harmful content and algorithms that prey on young people’s vulnerabilities. Options on the table include restricting social media for kids, curbing harmful posts, and making platforms take responsibility for what youth consume.
Detailed discussions are set to begin in early 2026, backed by a report on the issue. Meanwhile, the canton of Fribourg voted this year to ban mobile phones at school for under-15s, the latest local effort to curb screen time in classrooms.
With momentum building and parents praising tougher rules, the next year could be a turning point in Europe’s digital wellbeing journey 🌐✨
