Last Friday in Miami, representatives from the United States, Egypt, Qatar and Türkiye revealed their joint support for the near-term establishment and launch of the Board of Peace, a new transitional administration in Gaza. U.S. presidential special envoy Steve Witkoff shared the updates on X this Saturday, detailing progress and the road ahead.
During talks, the four countries reviewed results from the first phase of the ceasefire that began this October:
- Expanded humanitarian aid deliveries 📦
- Return of hostage bodies 🤝
- Partial withdrawal of forces 🚧
- Overall reduction in hostilities ✌️
'The first phase has yielded progress, including expanded humanitarian assistance, the return of hostage bodies, partial force withdrawals and a reduction in hostilities,' Witkoff said. For phase two, the focus shifts to:
- Setting up a unified Gazan authority
- Protecting civilians and maintaining public order
- Upholding obligations, restraint, and monitoring
Despite the ceasefire, Israel has continued strikes in Gaza. Gaza's civil defense reported six people killed in a shelter attack last Friday, bringing the death toll among Palestinians to 400 since October. On the other side, the Israeli military said three soldiers were killed during the same period.
Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called on countries to contribute troops to a stabilization force but warned the plan depends on Hamas disarming.
Further consultations are planned in the coming weeks as global powers push for a peaceful and stable Gaza transition. 🌐✨
