40 Years of Progress: The Chinese Mainland’s Fight Against AIDS

Imagine a time when an HIV diagnosis was seen as a death sentence. Back in 1985, when the Chinese mainland detected its first AIDS case, options were limited and stigma was sky-high. Fast forward to December 2025, and the story has changed.

This year marks 40 years of relentless effort in prevention, treatment and research. From expanding testing networks to rolling out innovative therapies, the Chinese mainland has built a robust toolbox against HIV. 🚀🔬

In a recent interview with CGTN Health Talk, Professor Li Taisheng, director of the Infectious Diseases Department at Peking Union Medical College Hospital, shared how science and compassion have driven progress:

'We started with almost nothing. Today, we offer free testing, modern antiretroviral treatment and strong community support. Our goal is ending AIDS as a public health threat.'

Under his leadership, public health campaigns have reached millions, while research teams collaborate globally on vaccines and long-acting treatments. The Chinese mainland now earns respect for sharing data, expertise and medical supplies with international partners. 🤝🌏

Looking ahead, experts aim to close remaining gaps in rural areas and improve quality of life for all people living with HIV. The mission continues: putting life first, with science and solidarity lighting the path. ❤️
