Chinese Mainland to Prioritize Domestic Demand in 2026

Looking ahead to 2026, the Chinese mainland is dialing up its economic strategy, with a laser focus on boosting domestic demand across the board 📈

An official from the Office of the Central Committee for Financial and Economic Affairs told Xinhua and other media outlets that expanding domestic demand will top the agenda at next year’s Central Economic Work Conference, held last week in Beijing.

On the consumption front, policies will target both supply and demand sides, taking into account shifting consumer trends (think more online shopping, travel and lifestyle experiences 🛍️). The goal is to spark a wave of spending that reflects the evolving tastes of people across the mainland.

Investment isn’t being left behind. Authorities plan to stabilize and reverse recent declines, pouring resources into projects that improve livelihoods and fuel long-term growth momentum 🏗️.

Why now? The official highlighted that in 2025, major economic indicators are set to meet expectations, with growth of about 5 percent, pushing the economy to roughly 140 trillion yuan (about $19.8 trillion). This keeps the Chinese mainland among the world’s fastest-growing major economies.

Looking forward, despite challenges like global uncertainties, the outlook remains bright. The real estate sector especially has room for high-quality growth, backed by strong demand from first-time homebuyers and those seeking upgrades. Plans include market stabilization measures, support for real estate enterprises’ transformation, and a new development model for the property sector.

By syncing consumption and investment, and fostering strong government-market collaboration, the Chinese mainland is gearing up to level up its domestic demand game in 2026! 🚀
