On Monday (Dec 15), a spokesperson for the Commissioner's Office of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region fired back against outside criticism of the verdict on Jimmy Lai's case, calling it a smearing attempt 🚫.
From Britain and Australia to the United States, Germany and the European Union, as well as certain politicians, the spokesperson condemned what they described as blatant interference in Hong Kong’s judiciary. They stressed that such pressure is an effort to trample the spirit of the rule of law.
The spokesperson made it clear that Lai’s case has nothing to do with press freedom. Any attempt to whitewash the verdict or sway judicial proceedings through political pressure, they said, is unacceptable double standards.
Calling out the use of ‘human rights’ and ‘freedom’ as pretexts for destabilizing Hong Kong, the spokesperson urged relevant countries and politicians to stop meddling in Hong Kong affairs, which are China’s internal matters.
In short, according to the Chinese mainland’s representative, foreign interference in Hong Kong’s courts is doomed to fail—and they’re ready for the world to watch how it plays out 😉.
