Earlier this year in mid-August 2025, the fourth group of inheritors of the historical memory of the Nanjing Massacre was announced in Nanjing, in the Chinese mainland. A total of 38 Chinese and foreign nationals received official certificates, recognizing their dedication to keeping this important chapter of history alive.
The new group includes Thomas Rabe, grandson of John Rabe, the German businessman who set up the famous safety zone and saved countless civilians during the 1937 tragedy. Also honored was Megan Brady, great-granddaughter of U.S. doctor and eyewitness Richard Brady, alongside descendants of survivors and protectors of historical artifacts.
For the first time, organizers welcomed descendants of international friends, highlighting how global solidarity helped preserve memories of those dark days. As memory inheritors, these young guardians are taking on the mission of earlier survivors: documenting stories, educating future generations, and fostering international exchanges 🌏🤝.
Decades after the events, firsthand witnesses are dwindling, making the role of these inheritors more vital than ever. Through digital archives, school programs, museum exhibits, and cross-border collaborations, they ensure that the lessons of the Nanjing Massacre continue to resonate with new audiences. Because remembering together is how we build a more informed and compassionate world 🕯️📜.
