Winter 2025-26 Flu Update ❄️
Winter in the northern hemisphere is a peak season for respiratory infections. According to the World Health Organization, influenza infections remained low in most regions, but Japan and the UK are seeing an early, unusually strong wave.
Japan's Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare reported 196,900 flu cases from November 17 to 23, marking an unusually early start this year. Influenza A (H3N2) is the most common strain globally in places with rising activity.
Data from the weekly influenza report by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC) shows that H3N2 is also dominant in the Chinese mainland. No new pathogens have been found so far.
Experts like Wang Dayan from the National Institute for Viral Disease Control and Prevention note that dominant strains can shift between H1N1, H3N2 and Influenza B even within the same season. Peng Zhibin from China CDC explains that antigenic drift (tiny mutations) drives seasonal flu outbreaks but doesn't make the virus stronger each year.
Outbreaks are rising in childcare centers and schools in the Chinese mainland, especially among 5-14 year olds. Activity is expected to climb in the coming months.
