Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) officials and community groups are racing against the clock to rescue those affected and minimize losses after a huge fire tore through Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po yesterday afternoon. 🔥🏘️
The blaze broke out on Wednesday afternoon, trapping dozens. By today’s press briefing, Chief Executive John Lee confirmed that firefighters had rescued 55 residents from the flames and brought the fires in all seven impacted buildings under control.
Tragically, the Fire Services Department reports the death toll has risen to 65. Another 72 people—including eight firefighters—are receiving treatment in hospitals. Over 200 residents are still unaccounted for, and search teams are using drones to monitor hot spots and prevent reignition. 🚒🚁
In total, 304 fire engines and rescue vehicles have been deployed, and drones have been buzzing overhead to map heat levels. This high-tech approach aims to keep teams safe and speed up the search. 🛰️
The eight-building complex was wrapped in green mesh and scaffolding for a major renovation when the fire broke out. Police have arrested three renovation workers on suspicion of manslaughter after flammable materials were found to have accelerated the spread of the blaze.
Local groups and volunteers have also pitched in—handing out water, blankets and moral support. “We stand together,” says one volunteer. Community centers are open around the clock to help families of those missing.
As night falls, rescue crews continue their work, determined to bring relief and answers to families waiting anxiously. Stay tuned for updates as Hong Kong unites to face this challenge. ❤️
