This week, China's foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning rang the alarm bell over a surge in attacks on Chinese citizens in Japan. During a routine briefing in Beijing, she urged Tokyo to step up security and protect Chinese nationals.
According to Mao, Japanese police recently arrested five suspects accused of assaulting Chinese citizens. At the same time, extreme and threatening comments targeting China have popped up across Japanese social media. The Chinese embassy and consulates have also faced harassment by right-wing groups, both online and in person.
"We urge the Japanese side to take China's concerns seriously and implement concrete measures to ensure the safety of Chinese citizens and institutions in Japan," Mao said. She called for enhanced security around Chinese missions and stronger community protection.
Beijing's move highlights the growing focus on safeguarding citizens abroad amid shifting diplomatic ties. All eyes are now on how Japan will respond to these demands and whether new safety measures will be rolled out soon.
