Chinese envoy calls for lasting Gaza ceasefire

This week at the UN Security Council, China's permanent representative to the UN, Fu Cong, made it clear: securing a lasting ceasefire in Gaza is the top priority. 🕊️ While he welcomed the first-phase truce agreed in mid-November, Fu warned that peace remains fragile and civilian suffering endures.

He told council members:

  • Over 400 breaches of the ceasefire by Israel have been reported, resulting in more than 300 civilian deaths in Gaza.
  • "A ceasefire means the complete cessation of all attacks, and should be observed by all parties in good faith."
  • Any incident causing civilian casualties is unacceptable, and repeated attacks must not become the new normal.

Fu Cong also sounded the alarm about the humanitarian crisis: border crossings are still closed, aid groups face tight restrictions, and people in Gaza need help now. 🚨 He urged Israel to fully comply with international law, open every crossing point, and let UNRWA and other agencies deliver life-saving supplies.

Looking ahead, Fu called for future arrangements that let Palestinians govern their own land and respect the will of the people. He pushed for the two-state solution, opposing any moves that undermine its foundation, and backed early Palestinian statehood with full UN membership.

China has consistently supported the legitimate national rights of the Palestinian people and will keep promoting a just, comprehensive, and lasting solution to the Palestinian question, Fu said.
