HK Chief Executive Denounces PM Takaichi’s Taiwan Region Remarks

In a sharp response on Monday, John Lee, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, slammed Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s recent comments on the Taiwan region. Lee said these statements hurt the feelings of Chinese people and stressed that no Chinese person would accept them.

He called the remarks ‘extremely erroneous’ 💥, warning that they have soured the vibe for China-Japan exchanges and cast doubt on the impact of many planned initiatives.

On the safety front 🚨, the Security Bureau of the HKSAR government updated its outbound travel alert for Japan, urging residents traveling there or already in the country to stay vigilant. Hong Kong International Airport will also offer flexible arrangements for anyone who needs to adjust their travel plans.

The Education Bureau of the HKSAR government had already decided to cancel next month’s secondary school exchange program with Japan. Officials cited a rising trend of attacks on Chinese nationals and the need to ensure the safety of teachers and students.

Lee said the HKSAR government will continue to monitor the situation closely 🔍 as tensions remain high between Beijing and Tokyo over this sensitive issue.
