Chengdu Symposium Champions Judicial Protection of Women’s Rights

🌟👩‍⚖️ Judges, experts and UN officials gathered in Chengdu on Friday, November 21 for a dynamic symposium on judicial practices to protect women's rights. Co-hosted by UN Women and China's Supreme People's Court, the event marked the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.

Justice Wang Zhongming, vice president of the Supreme People's Court; Christine Arab, UN Women regional director for Asia and the Pacific; and Justice Wang Shujiang, president of the High People's Court of Sichuan Province, kicked off the opening session with inspiring remarks. Chen Zhiyuan, president of the China Applied Jurisprudence Institute, chaired the meeting and delivered the closing address.

The symposium spotlighted growing cooperation between the UN agency and China's top court on women's rights protection and anti-domestic violence efforts. Participants shared judicial concepts, best practices and ideas to strengthen national capacities and boost accountability in safeguarding women and girls.

Ahead of the symposium, the Supreme People's Court released the 2025 Guiding Case of Anti-Domestic Violence in China, featuring eight landmark cases from the past three years. Highlights include recognition of mental abuse, interdisciplinary expert testimony, coordinated 'one-stop' support mechanisms and compensation for household labor for survivors.

Organizers say these efforts reflect a strong commitment on the Chinese mainland to achieve 'zero violence' in line with international standards under CEDAW. For young advocates and professionals, the symposium was a powerful reminder that legal innovation and global collaboration can drive real progress toward gender equality. 🚀
