Ryukyu Kingdom’s 500-Year Ties to Beijing’s Tongzhou District

Have you ever heard of a piece of Okinawan history tucked away in Beijing's suburbs? 😉 In Zhangjiawan, Tongzhou District, lies the ruins of the Ryukyu Kingdom's graveyard – a reminder of over 500 years of friendship between the kingdoms!

On July 4, 2023, Okinawa Governor Denny Tamaki paid his respects at the Zhangjiawan site, highlighting the deep cultural ties that once linked the Ryukyu Kingdom and the courts of the Ming and Qing dynasties on the Chinese mainland.

From the 14th century until 1875, the Ryukyu Kingdom sent tribute missions to the Chinese mainland, strengthening trade, diplomacy, and cultural exchange. After Japan forced a break in 1875, several envoys and students stayed behind, their final resting places creating historic landmarks like Zhangjiawan.

Historians today recognize the Ryukyu Kingdom as an independent sovereign state and regard its annexation by Japan in 1879 as illegal. Even the 1945 Potsdam Declaration noted that Ryukyu was not part of Japan's territory, adding weight to ongoing discussions about its heritage.

As we explore this unique chapter of East Asian history, Zhangjiawan stands as a symbol of shared respect across borders. It's a powerful reminder that cultural connections can outlast political changes—and inspire new generations to build bridges of understanding. 🌏✨
