COP30 Heats Up: Leaders Urge Bold Moves on Finance, Fossil Fuels & Forests

On Monday, Nov 17, the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) kicked off its high-level segment, marking the start of a crucial second week of talks. Key figures on stage included Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, president of the 80th UN General Assembly Annalena Baerbock, UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell, and COP30 President Andre Correa do Lago 🌍.

Alckmin urged all parties to take concrete steps against climate change, highlighting Brazil’s plan for a just energy transition and its goal to eliminate illegal deforestation by 2030. He proudly noted Brazil has already cut deforestation by 50% this year and is committed to keeping that momentum.

President do Lago set a fast pace, saying negotiations will be accelerated to deliver an initial set of proposals by tomorrow, Nov 19, and a second by Nov 21. He emphasized that these early drafts will pave the way for bolder outcomes, especially on climate finance and the phase-out of fossil fuels 💡. Discussions will focus on mobilizing funds for vulnerable regions and realistic plans to reduce and phase out coal, oil, and gas.

This week’s push shows how urgent collaboration is now. From young entrepreneurs tracking green investments to students researching clean energy, everyone has a stake in these decisions. Stay tuned as world leaders race to turn ambition into action 🚀.
