Today in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shibani to chart a fresh course for ties between the two countries 🤝.
Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasized China's friendly policy toward the Syrian people and respect for their independent choices. He called for mutual respect over core interests, zero interference in internal affairs, and a revival of their long-standing friendship.
Highlighting shared values, China expressed its appreciation for Syria's commitment to the one-China principle and urged continued support against Taiwan independence in favor of full reunification. Security was also on the agenda as the two sides noted the UN Security Council's designation of the East Turkistan Islamic Movement as a terrorist group. Al-Shibani reassured that Syria will bar any entity from using its territory to harm China's interests.
Looking ahead, both nations are keen to deepen cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and within multilateral forums like the United Nations and the China Arab States Cooperation Forum. Wang also voiced China's support for a Syrian-led, Syrian-owned peace process and national reconstruction driven by inclusive political dialogue.
Al-Shibani, in turn, reaffirmed Syria's firm stand on the one-China principle, its zero-tolerance policy toward terrorism, and its eagerness to learn from China's development experience. The two ministers wrapped up their discussions with a joint statement pledging to strengthen multilateral communication, security coordination, and BRI collaboration.
