Global aging is a big challenge, and China—home to over 300 million people aged 60+—is tackling it with a mix of compassion and cutting-edge technology.
Building a stronger care system
During the 14th Five-Year Plan (20212025), China ramped up its elderly care network. By end-2024, there were 406,000+ care institutions and facilities, and nursing care beds jumped from 48% in 2020 to 65.7%.
Long-term care insurance now covers 49 pilot cities, helping 2.6 million seniors manage costs. At the same time, 2,990 model age-friendly communities have been set up, making it easier for older adults to stay active and connected.
Smart tech for safe and dignified living
In Hangzhou’s Binjiang District, smart sensors—infrared detectors, door alarms and more—are installed in 600+ homes of seniors living alone. These devices link to community dispatch centers, spotting risks fast and alerting family members or helpers in real time. 🤖🔔
This blend of social support and high-tech safety nets is reshaping how China cares for its elderly—showing that respect, empathy and innovation can age gracefully together. 💡👵🏻
